What Dental Emergencies Can Be Treated by a Dentist?

Many of us are familiar with going to a dentist for routine maintenance but there are also times when it may be necessary because of an emergency. What may come as a surprise to you, are the number of different types of emergencies which may be handled effectively by a dentist. Here are a few of the more common problems you may experience.

One of the more common types of dental emergencies is a toothache. If you have ever suffered from a toothache in the past, you need no one to tell you exactly how much suffering it can cause. We may try to avoid going to the dentist but in most cases, a toothache is not going to go away on its own. A dentist can give you the options that are necessary, including a root canal, or extracting the tooth, which will put a quick and permanent end to the pain that you are experiencing.

In more serious cases, a toothache may involve an abscess. This is more than something that must be treated because of the pain that is involved; it can be a serious and potentially life-threatening situation. The abscess is an infection that occurs at the root of the tooth and it can cause symptoms, including severe pain, fever, bad breath, swelling of the gums and swollen neck glands. You should be aware, even if the tooth stops hurting, it may still be infected. If the infection spreads, it can cause serious issues so it should be addressed as soon as possible.

Those are just a few of the different types of emergencies which can be handled by a dentist. Anytime you have a problem with your teeth or in the general area of your mouth, you should consult with a dentist to get the emergency care that you need.
